Garden of Original Sin, 4'x8' pastel on canvas
A dangerous arrangement was cut in the garden. Eve’s punishment remains a lived experience for those taught they are created second. Deep in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains the holy word is alive. Politics tremor like trumpets and shotguns in the hills. The land holds a mighty tradition, and the garden offers the fruit of intellectual freedom. The native plants grow through these paintings and sculptures - azalea and muscari, dogwood and iris.
The serpent followed Eve from the garden. He slips inside the vessel and dances naked with the flowers. Drawn from pastel, he licks the dust from the canvas. His body makes ominous steely lines that weave between stems. Nature’s trophies - domestic arrangements on the side table. But something wild seduces from within the flowers, pushing deeper to know the softness of the petals, awakening to the awareness of their beauty laid bare, waiting to be plucked from the garden.
